Create individualized playlists
A suggestion from the book Blended: Using Disruptive Innovation to Improve Schools, Horn and Staker propose individualized playlists. What is an individualized playlist? It's a group of resources students can use to learn or review to demonstrate deep learning of learning targets and standards. This can be videos curated from the web like YouTube (make playlists of different videos on your channel), Schooltube, Teachertube, Flocabulary, TEDEd, CrashCourse, and others. The videos can be teacher created while a list of websites makes up part of individualized playlist. Pages in existing textbooks have a place too. Other sites like Gooru and Sophia have content developed by educators which could given to students to complete. The gist is to give students a list of resources to use as learning and review tools.
Pre-assess to determine which playlist a student gets
Does every student get a different list? That would lead to a lot of unnecessary work. Go about your work this way. First, give a pre-assessment of essential knowledge and skills based on the most important learning targets to be learned. Set levels of mastery based on how many questions students get correct. For example, students who answer more questions correct get a shorter personalized playlist because they have already demonstrated mastery on many or most of the learning targets. Students who answer fewer questions correct get a longer playlist because they have more standards to master.
The playlist isn't meant to completed entirely by the individual student. Some portion of it will completed that way, however the use of large group and small group instruction comprises a portion of the instruction.
Students and teachers need regular checkpoints
Regular checkpoints are needed by teacher and student. The teacher needs to know what learning targets are being learned and which are not. Having this data helps a teacher provide intervention as needed. Formatives assessments need to be given regularly so students know where they are succeeding and struggling. Teachers need this information to know which students need enrichment and which need intervention.
